Non-touristy Istanbul: life in the Turkish metropolis

For most visitors, Istanbul is Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Bosphorus, bazaars, baklava, and ship horns. But behind the bright window display of tourist routes lies a completely different city. One where people live, work, and take their children to school.

Although there are few architectural monuments there, there are parks, schools, modern residential complexes, and developed infrastructure.

Areas for permanent residence in Istanbul

1. Beyikduzu

Beyikduzu is located in the west of the European part of Istanbul, along the coast of the Sea of Marmara. It is one of the greenest areas of the city, with wide streets and affordable real estate in Istanbul, which is rare for a metropolis. In addition, new residential complexes have been built with modern infrastructure. Swimming pools, fitness centers, security, and underground parking are all standard features. The area has many schools, medical centers, shopping centers, and convenient access to highways.

2. Kadikoy

Kadikoy is one of the most comfortable areas on the Asian side of the Bosphorus. It is a neighborhood with soul: ancient architecture coexists with modern apartments, street markets are located next to trendy cafes and bookstores. Teachers, artists, office workers, and those who love the city rhythm but without excessive hustle and bustle live here. The neighborhood has good transport accessibility: ferries, metro, and buses.

3. Atasehir

Atasehir is located on the Asian side of Istanbul, east of the city center. This area is often referred to as the “business center of the new generation.” It is home to the offices of banks, insurance companies, and international companies, and in recent years, residential neighborhoods with new complexes, security, and underground parking have been actively developing. The district has a good road network, large shopping centers, and green areas such as Nezahat Gökyiğit Botanik Parkı.

4. Sarıyer

Sarıyer is located in the north of the European part of Istanbul, along the Bosphorus and closer to the Black Sea. This area combines elite residential neighborhoods, green hills, and secluded bays. There are villas, low-rise buildings, diplomatic residences, and prestigious international schools. The area has a lot of greenery, natural parks, and offices of large companies in the Maslak business cluster.

5. Levent

Levent is the main business center of modern Istanbul. It is home to the offices of international companies, from Turkish banks to Microsoft and Google representative offices. The infrastructure is well developed, with shopping centers such as Kanyon and Metrocity, international restaurant chains, and premium fitness clubs. The metro connects the district to the city center in 20 minutes, and the Bosphorus coast is within walking distance.

6. Etiler

Etiler is considered one of the most environmentally friendly areas of Istanbul. Low-rise buildings predominate here: townhouses, villas, and small residential complexes. The infrastructure is developed to meet the needs of residents: private schools, medical centers, and sports clubs. The Akmerkez shopping center offers European-level shopping. Its proximity to Atatürk Airport has made the area popular among expats, and this reputation continues.

These areas of Istanbul are rarely featured in guidebooks, but they are of interest to those who are seriously considering living here. Here you will find a place to pursue your career ambitions, enjoy a peaceful family life, and relax in the park.
